The developers of the Linux Mint project announced that they are working on adapting the Cinnamon desktop environment to function within the Wayland protocol framework. Experimental support for Wayland will be included in the upcoming Cinnamon 6.0 release, scheduled for November, and an optional Wayland-based Cinnamon session will be available for testing in Linux Mint 21.3, expected in December.
The porting process is still in its early stages, and many features available when running Cinnamon in an X.org-based environment are currently missing or not functioning correctly in the Wayland session. However, window management and virtual desktops are already operational in the Wayland environment, and most applications and components, including the file manager and panel, can be launched.
The goal is to have Cinnamon fully operational in the Wayland environment by the release of Linux Mint 23, which is planned for 2026. After that, the developers will consider the possibility of switching to a Wayland-based session as the default. It’s expected that two years will be sufficient to debug functionality in Wayland and resolve any existing issues.
