The first release of the high-performance HTTP server and multi-protocol proxy server Angie, branched from Nginx by a group of former developers who left F5 Network, has been published. The source code for Angie is available under the BSD license.
To support the development of the project and continue assisting Nginx users in Russia, a company called 'Web Server' has been established, which has received an investment of $1 million. Among the co-owners of the new company are: Valentin Bartenev (team leader who developed the Nginx Unit product), Ivan Polyayanov (former head of frontend developers at Rambler and Mail.Ru), Oleg Mamontov (head of the technical support team at NGINX Inc), and Ruslan Ermilov (ru@FreeBSD.org). Zaour Abasmirzoev has been appointed as the director of the new company; he is the former technical director of lenta.ru. Igor Sysoev, the founder of Nginx, is not involved in this project.
Angie version 1.0.0 is branched from the Nginx 1.23.2 codebase and includes the following changes:
- A HTTP RESTful interface implementation has been added for accessing the basic information about the web server and statistics on client connections, shared memory zones, HTTP requests, caching of HTTP responses, DNS requests generated by the 'stream' module for TCP/UDP sessions, and limited zones enforced by the limit_conn and limit_req modules. The statistics are output in JSON format. A new directive 'api' has been introduced to enable the HTTP RESTful interface.
- A 'status_zone' directive has been added to the 'http' module, defining a zone for accumulating statistics on requests processed in the context of 'server' and 'location' directives.
- A 'status_zone' directive has been added to the 'stream' module, defining a zone for accumulating statistics on TCP and UDP sessions.
- A 'status_zone' parameter has been added to the 'resolver' directive, defining a zone for accumulating statistics on sent DNS requests.
- A variable $angie_version has been added with the version server Angie.
Future plans include significant enhancements to the original functionality while maintaining basic compatibility with the Nginx configuration and the ability to use Angie as a replacement for Nginx without substantial changes to the settings. Compared to the original Nginx, we plan to qualitatively improve fault tolerance, increase performance, simplify maintenance, and add additional capabilities for clustered systems.
