The first release of the labwc project has been published, developing a composite server for Wayland with features reminiscent of the Openbox window manager (the project is presented as an attempt to create an alternative to Openbox for Wayland). labwc is characterized by minimalism, compact implementation, extensive customization options, and high performance. The project's code is written in C and is distributed under the GPLv2 license.
It is based on the wlroots library, developed by the Sway user environment developers and providing essential functions for organizing the operation of a composite manager based on Wayland. To run X11 applications in a Wayland-based environment, support for the XWayland DDX component is available.
Extensions can be connected to implement features such as screenshot creation, desktop wallpaper display, and panel and menu placement. For example, three options for application menus are offered — bemenu, fuzzel, and wofi. Waybar can be used as a panel. The theme, main menu, and hotkeys are configurable via XML format configuration files.
In the future, support for Openbox configuration files and themes is planned, alongside support for HiDPI screens, implementation of layer-shell, wlr-output-management, and foreign-toplevel protocols, integration of menu support, addition of the ability to place on-screen indicators (osd), and an Alt+Tab style window switching interface.
