The release of the Wolvic Chromium 1.0 browser has been announced, which uses the Chromium engine instead of the Mozilla Gecko engine and Firefox technologies. The Wolvic browser (formerly known as Firefox Reality) is designed for use in augmented and virtual reality systems, providing a 3D interface for navigating websites using a 3D headset, and allows web developers to create three-dimensional web applications for virtual reality systems using the WebXR, WebAR, and WebVR APIs, in addition to traditional flat pages.
Navigation in the browser interface is done using VR controllers or through eye-tracking, and data input in web forms is achieved via a virtual keyboard or voice input system, enabling the filling out of forms and submitting search queries using Mozilla's speech recognition engine. It is also possible to view spatial videos captured in 360 degrees within the browser.
Pre-built packages are created for the Android platform and support 3D headsets such as Huawei VR Glass, Huawei Vision Glass, VIVE Focus, Lynx R1, Lenovo A3, Magic Leap 2, Meta Quest 2/3/Pro, Oculus Quest, and Pico 4/4E. It can also run in testing mode on a regular Android smartphone without a 3D headset.
In terms of capabilities, Wolvic Chromium 1.0 is very close to Wolvic v1.7 based on the Mozilla Gecko engine, with features like navigation using eye-tracking mechanisms and an enhanced fullscreen mode. Specific changes include the addition of a widget for displaying titles and 18 new virtual environments that recreate various landscapes (environments can be activated through the Settings > Environment dialog). Additionally, significant improvements have been made to stability, support for the latest operating system versions, and functionality related to the implementation of the OpenXR standard.
