The release notes for the upcoming Ubuntu 26.04 release (last updated on 03.27.2026) indicate that the new Ubuntu Desktop, featuring a Gnome-based environment, now requires a minimum of 6 GB of RAM and 25 GB of disk space.
The server version 26.04 now requires 1.5 GB of RAM, while 22.04 only required 1 GB, and 18.04 needed just 512 MB.
Against the backdrop of rising costs for RAM and storage drives, this could increase infrastructure expenses for companies using Ubuntu, ultimately impacting their users' wallets.
In comparison, Windows 11 requires a minimum of 4 GB of RAM.
The planned release date for Ubuntu 26.04 is April 23, 2026.
