A new version of the PorteuX 2.8 distribution has been released. It is based on Slackware and inspired by the Slax and Porteus projects. PorteuX features include preconfigured desktop environments based on Cinnamon, COSMIC, GNOME, KDE, LXDE, LXQt, MATE, and Xfce; hardware acceleration for multimedia processing on Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA GPUs; a 3-second Live boot; a read-only system image with additional application installation from the PorteuX App Store; update rollback support; a copy2ram boot mode; and network booting. The project has created eight builds, ranging in size from 577 to 759 MB.
Key changes:
- To implement a multilayer file system that allows combining multiple directories into a single virtual file system, the aufs-ng project, developed from scratch by PorteuX developers, is used instead of the default aufs. Aufs-ng supports the same disk format and options as aufs, but utilizes more modern kernel subsystems. Linux, which allowed us to reduce the number of global locks and speed up copy operations.
- In Xfce, the xfwm4 window manager is replaced in X11-based sessions by a proprietary fork, xfwm4-gl, which is configured to use OpenGL for rendering (if OpenGL support is unavailable, it falls back to XRender). Using xfwm4-gl has improved rendering performance by approximately 10%, reduced power consumption, supported adaptive VSync, and enabled disabling compositing when running applications in fullscreen mode. In Wayland-based sessions, Xfce continues to use the labwc compositing manager.
- Colons are now allowed in filenames on NTFS partitions, resolving compatibility issues with Wine and Proton. The user can now choose between NTFS and NTFS3 drivers (NTFS is enabled by default).
- Added option to save all information output by initrd during boot
- In the COSMIC environment, the gnome-system-monitor application has been replaced by cosmic-monitor.
- The gnome-session-sysvinit package has been included and a patch has been added to disable systemd in GNOME.
- For KDE, the appstream-qt, qtkeychain, and zint packages have been added.
- Autostart of the Bluez Bluetooth stack has been stopped.
- The new versions of the desktop environments Cinnamon 6.6.9, COSMIC 1.6.0, GNOME 50.4, KDE Plasma 6.7.4 are used.
- Package versions have been updated, such as the kernel Linux 7.2, GCC 16.2.0, FFmpeg 9.0.1, Mesa 26.2.1, NVIDIA drivers 610.57.04
