A new version of the PorteuX 2.8 distribution has been released, based on Slackware and developed under the influence of the Slax and Porteus projects. PorteuX features pre-configured environments based on desktop environments such as Cinnamon, COSMIC, GNOME, KDE, LXDE, LXQt, MATE, and Xfce, inclusion of hardware acceleration for multimedia file processing on Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA GPUs, booting in Live mode in 3 seconds, a read-only system image with the ability to install applications from the PorteuX App Store, support for rollback of installed updates, a RAM boot mode (copy2ram), and the option for network booting. The project has created 8 builds, ranging from 577 to 759 MB in size.
Key changes:
- To organize the operation of a layered filesystem, allowing the combination of multiple directories into a single virtual filesystem, the aufs-ng project, developed from scratch by the PorteuX developers, is used instead of aufs by default. Aufs-ng supports an identical disk format and option set as aufs, but utilizes more modern Linux kernel subsystems, reducing the number of global locks and speeding up copy operations.
- In Xfce, instead of the xfwm4 window manager, a custom fork called xfwm4-gl has been implemented in the X11-based session, utilizing OpenGL for rendering (if OpenGL support is absent, it falls back to XRender). The use of xfwm4-gl has improved rendering performance by approximately 10%, reduced power consumption, provided support for adaptive vsync, and enabled the disabling of compositing when launching applications in full-screen mode. The compositing manager labwc continues to be used in the session based on Wayland in Xfce.
- The use of colons in file names is now allowed in NTFS partitions, resolving compatibility issues with Wine and Proton. Users can choose between the ntfs and ntfs3 drivers (ntfs is enabled by default).
- An option has been added to save all information output by initrd during boot.
- In the COSMIC environment, the gnome-system-monitor application has been replaced with cosmic-monitor.
- The gnome-session-sysvinit package has been included, and a patch has been added to disable systemd in GNOME.
- For KDE, the appstream-qt, qtkeychain, and zint packages have been added.
- Automatic starting of the Bluez Bluetooth stack has been discontinued.
- New versions of the desktop environments Cinnamon 6.6.9, COSMIC 1.6.0, GNOME 50.4, and KDE Plasma 6.7.4 have been implemented.
