Twelve years after the last test version and sixteen years since the last stable release, the Damn Small Linux 2024 distribution has been published, intended for use on low-powered systems and outdated hardware. The new release is of alpha quality and is prepared for the i386 architecture. The size of the bootable image is 665 MB (for comparison, the previous version was 50 MB).
The build is based on the Live distribution AntiX 23, which in turn is built on the Debian package base. The goal of reviving Damn Small Linux was to create a compact Live distribution for outdated systems that fits on a CD (less than 700 MB) and offers usable graphical and console environments. Users can choose between environments based on the Fluxbox and JWM window managers. The distribution includes three web browsers: BadWolf, Dillo, and Links2.
The office applications suite is formed from the AbiWord text editor, Gnumeric spreadsheet, Sylpheed email client, and Zathura PDF viewer. For multimedia content, MPV and XMMS are included. The distribution also features the mtPaint graphic editor, zzzFM file manager, gFTP FTP/SFTP client, and Leafpad text editor.
Among the console applications are the Ranger file manager, VisiData spreadsheet, Tmux terminal multiplexer, Mutt email client, Cmus music player, CDW CD/DVD recording software, SurfRaw search system, and text editors Vim and Nano, along with W3M and Links2 browsers.
