The upcoming release and current beta versions of the Linux kernel 5.4 support a driver for the Microsoft exFAT file system. However, this driver is based on old Samsung code (version branch number 1.2.9). In its own smartphones, the company is already using a variant of the driver called sdFAT based on branch 2.2.0.
Now, information that the developer from South Korea, Park Ju Hyung, presented a new version of the exFAT driver based on the latest developments from the company. The changes in the code relate not only to updates in functionality but also to the removal of Samsung-specific modifications. This has made the driver suitable for all Linux kernels, not just Samsung's Android firmware.
The code is already available in the PPA repository for Ubuntu, and for other distributions, it can be built from the source. Linux kernels supported range from 3.4 to 5.3-rc on all current platforms. The list includes x86 (i386), x86_64 (amd64), ARM32 (AArch32), and ARM64 (AArch64). The developer has already suggested adding the driver to the main branch to replace the old version.
It is also noted that the driver works faster than the Microsoft version. Thus, an updated exFAT driver can be expected, although there is currently no exact information on the timeline for incorporating the development into the main branch.
Let us remind you that exFAT is a proprietary version of the file system that first appeared in Windows Embedded CE 6.0. The system is designed for flash drives.
