The developers of the Raspberry Pi project have introduced the Raspberry Pi Connect service, designed for remote desktop access to the Raspberry Pi OS distribution via a web browser. This service can be utilized in Raspberry Pi OS environments for Raspberry Pi 4, Raspberry Pi 400, and Raspberry Pi 5 boards, built on Debian 12 and translated to a graphical stack based on Wayland.
To use the service, it is enough to install the "rpi-connect" package, after which a new indicator will appear in the system tray, from which the service can be activated. After registration, you can connect to the device from the browser via the page connect.raspberrypi.com, which is only used for coordinating connections, while a direct connection is established between the browser and the operating system using the WebRTC protocol. If a direct connection cannot be established, optionally, encrypted tunnel forwarding is supported through servers the Raspberry Pi Foundation (they promise to keep the service free for regular users). On the device side, for handling connections, a background process rpi-connect runs, which starts a VNC server, to which connections are made from a VNC client tailored for browser operation.
