The RubyWM project has been published, developing a window manager based on the X11 protocol, written in Ruby, including a driver for X11 protocol support. RubyWM supports virtual desktops and can use both tiling and arbitrary window positioning on the desktop. The RubyWM code is distributed under the MIT license. The project also develops the pure-X11 library implementing the X11 protocol in Ruby.
The window manager is marked as experimental but is already used in the author's daily work. Unimplemented features include window decoration (currently using a simple border), multi-monitor configurations, and mouse-based moving and resizing by grabbing the edge of a window (to attach to a window, it is suggested to hold the Window key while pressing the left or right mouse button). X11 ClientMessage events, which can be generated by the xdotool utility, are used to control the window manager. Keyboard shortcuts are handled with sxhkd.
