Fedora Linux edition for smartphones has been released

After ten years of inactivity resumed the work of the group Fedora Mobility, aimed at developing an official edition of the Fedora distribution for mobile devices. Currently being developed the Fedora Mobility variant is intended for installation on smartphones PinePhone, developed by the Pine64 community. Further editions of Fedora for other smartphones, such as Librem 5 and OnePlus 5/5T, are expected once their support is included in the standard Linux kernel.

Currently, a set of packages for mobile devices has already been added to the Fedora 33 (rawhide) repository, which includes a touch-screen driven user interface called Phosh. The shell Phosh is being developed by Purism for the Librem 5 smartphone, utilizes a composite server Phoc , working on top of Wayland, and is based on GNOME technologies (GTK, GSettings, DBus). The build also notes the possibility of using the KDE Plasma Mobile environment, but packages for it have not yet been included in the Fedora repository.Among the offered applications and components:

β€” a messenger based on libpurple.

  • oFono β€” a stack for accessing telephony.
  • chatty β€” an XMPP plugin for libpurple.
  • carbons pidgin β€” an enhanced version of the instant messaging program pidgin, which uses the libpurple library for chatty.
  • purple-mm-sms β€” a libpurple plugin for working with SMS, integrated with ModemManager.
  • purple-matrix β€” a plugin for the Matrix network for libpurple.
  • purple-telegram β€” a plugin for Telegram for libpurple.
  • rtl8723cs-firmware β€” firmware for the Bluetooth chip used in the PinePhone.
  • calls β€” an interface for dialing numbers and receiving calls.
  • feedbackd β€” a background process integrated with Phosh for physical feedback (vibration signals, LED indicators, sound signals).
  • pinephone-helpers β€” scripts for initializing the modem and switching audio streams during phone calls.
  • squeekboard β€” an on-screen keyboard with Wayland support.
  • gnome-terminal β€” a terminal emulator.
  • gnome-contacts β€” an address book.
  • Let us remind you that the hardware components of the PinePhone are designed for replaceable components β€” most modules are not soldered, but connected via detachable ribbons, which allows, for example, to replace the mediocre default camera with a higher-quality one if desired. The device is built on a quad-core ARM Allwinner A64 SoC with a Mali 400 MP2 GPU, equipped with 2 or 3 GB of RAM, a 5.95-inch screen (1440Γ—720 IPS), Micro SD (with support for booting from the SD card), 16 or 32 GB of eMMC (internal), a USB-C port with USB Host and combined video output for connecting a monitor, a 3.5 mm mini-jack, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 (A2DP), GPS, GPS-A, GLONASS, two cameras (2 and 5Mpx), a removable 3000mAh battery, and hardware-disabling components with LTE/GNSS, Wi-Fi, a microphone, and speakers.
