The reason for discontinuing development is cited as the lack of free time of the remaining maintainers to support the distribution at an adequate level. It was decided that it is better to stop work entirely while the distribution is fully functional and relevant, rather than condemn the user community to gradual stagnation. This step will allow interested enthusiasts to utilize the Antergos developments to create new projects.
A final update is planned to be released soon, which will disable Antergos-specific repositories. Packages developed by the project will be transferred to AUR. Thus, existing users will not need to migrate to another distribution and will continue to receive updates from the standard Arch Linux repositories and AUR.
At one time, the project continued the development of the Cinnarch distribution after its transition from Cinnamon to GNOME due to the use of part of the word Cinnamon in the distribution's name. Antergos was built on the package base of Arch Linux and offered a classic user environment in the style of GNOME 2, initially formed using additions to GNOME 3, which was later replaced with MATE (the ability to install Cinnamon was also brought back later). The goal of the project was to create a more user-friendly and easier-to-use edition of Arch Linux, suitable for installation by a wide audience of users.
