Daniel Robbins, the founder of the Gentoo distribution, who stepped away from the project in 2009, announced the discontinuation of the Funtoo Linux distribution, which he had been developing since 2006 as a project for further enhancing existing technologies in Gentoo. The reason for closing the project is cited as a loss of interest and a desire to devote his time to other pursuits. No suitable candidate was found in the community to take over management, so the decision was made to simply wind down the project, although those interested may continue its development through forking.
Key features of Funtoo include: support for automatic package builds from source (packages are synced from Gentoo), use of Git for development, a distributed Portage tree, a more compact format for build manifests, and the use of the Metro tool for creating live builds. The last release of the project was made in 2019, and the most recent installation images for the x86_64 architecture date back to 2020.
