The upcoming Windows 10 20H1 build will receive numerous new features. Recently, it was announced that the Paint and WordPad applications would be moved to optional status, available optionally. Now, however, online sources indicate that a similar fate awaits the simple text editor Notepad.
All three applications, which have been essential for Microsoft operating systems for many years, will receive optional status. This means that users will be able to uninstall and reinstall them at their discretion, just like any other software. Currently, the option to uninstall Notepad is available in the Windows 10 20H1 build 19041.
The 'Optional Features' section in Windows 10, accessible through the settings menu, allows users to enable and disable features and applications, including Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Microsoft Quick Assist, and others. Clearly, Microsoft understands that users need the ability to remove tools that are not used. Thus, more applications are receiving optional status, as despite their popularity, they are becoming outdated.
Notepad can be removed from the optional features page, after which a reboot of the OS will be required. Once done, the application can be completely eliminated, and it will no longer be available from the command line or the built-in Windows search. As with other software, users will be able to reinstall Notepad if needed.
These and other new features will be available to users after the release of Windows 10 20H1 (version 2004). According to available information, the distribution of the new build is set to begin in the spring of this year.
