The release of the Mexican distribution ALDOS 1.4.18 has been announced, offering a classic-style user environment designed for minimal resource consumption and capable of running on low-powered systems. The distribution is based on Fedora Linux technologies but comes without the system manager systemd, instead utilizing Upstart for initialization and service management, Eudev for device coordination, and elogind for session management. The installation image size is 1.9 GB. The current branch of the ALDOS 1.4 distribution will be supported until the end of September 2029.
One of the features of ALDOS is the use of the oldest supported Linux kernel branch — 4.19, which has been chosen as the least bloated and most resource-efficient. A Linux kernel 5.4 is available for installation on newer hardware. SELinux is disabled by default. The graphical environment is based on Xfce 4.18, but if desired, MATE, KDE Plasma, LXQt, and Lumina Desktop can be installed from the repositories. A full set of multimedia codecs is available out of the box, and the repository contains over 35,000 packages. By default, localizations for Spanish, Catalan, and English are offered (support for other languages can be installed from the repository).
Among the software versions included in the ALDOS 1.4.18 release are: Glibc 2.27, LLVM 14.0.1, GCC 8.5, FFmpeg 6.0, Binutils 2.30, Python 3.9, Qt 5.15.13/6.2.7, GTK 3.24/4.10, Firefox 125, LibreOffice 7.3, Minder 1.16.4, Celluloid 0.26, MPV 0.38, Audacious 4.3.1, Remin 1.4.35.
