The first laureate of the BlueHats award, established by the French Interministerial Digital Directorate (DINUM), has been announced. The award is given to supporters of critically important free and open projects. The inaugural prize has been awarded to Simon Kelley, the creator, lead developer, and maintainer of the Dnsmasq project. The awarding jury, which included representatives from the Ministry of Education, the National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI), and the Digital Directorate (DINUM) of France, recognized the importance of the project and its work in maintaining network security. The monetary component of the award is set at 10,000 euros. This year, an additional three similar awards are planned to be given.
The Dnsmasq project combines a caching DNS resolver, server DHCP, a service for IPv6 route announcements, and a PXE boot service. The project is utilized in the Android platform and specialized distributions like OpenWrt and DD-WRT, as well as in the firmware of wireless routers from many manufacturers. In standard distributions, Dnsmasq can be installed using libvirt to provide DNS service functionality in virtual machines or activated in the NetworkManager configurator.
