The GNOME Foundation has released its financial report for the 2023 fiscal year, covering the period from October 2022 to September 2023. The report also highlights key events during this time, including the releases of GNOME 44 and 45, the appointment of a new director, and the developer conferences held (GUADEC 2023 in Riga, GNOME Asia 2022 in Kuala Lumpur, Linux App Summit in Brno).
In terms of financial performance, expenditures during the reporting period significantly exceeded income — $556,000 was received, while $676,000 was spent (with an overrun of $120,000 covered by previous savings). It is worth noting that overruns have also been observed in previous periods: in 2022, the project received $363,000 and spent $649,000 (an overrun of $286,000); in 2021, it received $287,000 and spent $927,000 (an overrun of $640,000); in 2020, it received $925,000 and spent $789,000 (a surplus of $136,000); in 2019, it received $915,000 and spent $608,000 (a surplus of $307,000); in 2018, it received $1.073 million and spent $365,000 (a surplus of $708,000). In November 2023, the project also received one million euros from the Sovereign fund.
Regarding the sources of income in 2023, of the received $556,000, $422,000 came from donations and sponsorships, $47,000 was earned from hosting conferences, and $80,000 was related to the GIMP project. As for expenses, $283,000 was spent on organizing conferences, $105,000 on support and infrastructure, $96,000 on the Outreach program (funding internships for women and minorities), $30,000 was allocated to the GIMP project, $121,000 was for administrative costs, and $39,000 was provided to fund other projects.
