The GNOME Foundation has announced the receipt of one million euros from the Sovereign fund, established in Germany to stimulate the development of open digital infrastructure and open-source ecosystems. The fund is created with resources provided by the German Ministry of Economics and is overseen by the Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation SPRIND. The received funds are planned to be used for modernizing the GNOME platform, enhancing tools, expanding resources for people with disabilities, and implementing public interest features.
Specifically, there are plans to develop a prototype of a new stack for people with disabilities and to make improvements to the existing stack, ensure support for selective encryption of user home directories, modernize the password and key storage, enhance hardware support quality, establish quality control, expand the Freedesktop API, and work on consolidating and improving platform components.
In addition to GNOME, the Sovereign fund has also provided funding to other open projects such as OpenSSH, WireGuard, Python, RubyGems, curl, OpenBGPd, OpenMLS, OpenPGP.js/GopenPGP, Pendulum, Sequoia PGP, and Yocto. The level of support for these projects is not specified, but it is known that the total budget for 2023 amounted to 11.5 million euros.
