The project developing a free automated circuit board design system , under the auspices of the Linux Foundation. The developers , believe that development under the Linux Foundation will attract additional resources for the project and enable the development of new services not directly related to the core development. The Linux Foundation, as a neutral platform for interaction with manufacturers, will also help bring new participants to the project. Additionally, KiCad will participate in the initiative , aimed at organizing collaboration between open source developers and companies or individuals willing to provide financial support to specific developers or important projects.
KiCad provides tools for editing electrical schematics and printed circuit boards, 3D visualization of boards, working with a library of electronic circuit components, and manipulating templates in format and project management. Packages for Windows, macOS, and various Linux distributions. The code is written in C++ using the wxWidgets library, and licensed under GPLv3. According to some printed circuit board manufacturers, about 15% of orders come with schematics prepared in KiCad.
