The NetBeans project became a Top-Level project in the Apache Foundation

After three releases in the Apache Incubator, the NetBeans project became a Top-Level project in the Apache Software Foundation.

In 2016, Oracle transferred the NetBeans project under the ASF's wing. According to the established procedure, all projects transferred to Apache first enter the Apache Incubator. During their time in the incubator, projects are brought in line with ASF standards. A license compliance check of the transferred intellectual property is also conducted.

The last release of Apache NetBeans 11.0 (incubating) occurred on April 4, 2019. This was the third major release under the ASF's wing. In 2018, the project received the Duke’s Choice Award.

The NetBeans project includes:

• NetBeans IDE — a free integrated development environment (IDE) for programming languages such as Java, Python, PHP, JavaScript, C, C++, Ada, and several others.

• NetBeans platform — a platform for developing modular cross-platform Java applications. Projects based on the NetBeans platform include: VisualVM, SweetHome3D, SNAP etc.
