As part of the OpenCut project, an effort has been made to develop a simple video editor positioned as an open alternative to the CapCut application from the Chinese company ByteDance, which develops the TikTok service. The project code is written in TypeScript using the Bun platform and is distributed under the MIT license. It supports builds as a desktop application, mobile app, and web version.
Among the advantages of the new project is the emphasis on user privacy (videos are edited on the local system and are not sent externally) and its free distribution, which does not require purchasing additional features or a paid subscription to remove watermarks. The stated capabilities include video editing based on a timeline, real-time preview, and multi-track editing. More than 40 participants have already joined the development, and the project has gained nearly 22,000 stars on GitHub.
At the current stage of development, the creation of the basic components of the user interface has been completed, and work is underway on core functionalities such as timeline scaling, clip duration adjustment, area selection, and navigation within fragments, as well as capabilities for exporting, previewing, and rendering videos. In the next phase, they plan to start developing filters, text editing tools, and effects.
Initially, the project was created under the name AppCut, but was later renamed to OpenCut. The developers may be forced to rename the program again, as the project faces claims of trademark infringement on OpenCut, which was registered last year and is already in use by an online video editor of the same name.
