The WSL-For-FreeBSD project develops an edition of the WSL2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux) toolkit, allowing FreeBSD to run on Windows instead of Linux with minimal changes to the core FreeBSD environment. Changes made are intended to be contributed back to the main open-source WSL2 codebase where possible. The project is positioned as personal and experimental.
At this stage, FreeBSD can already be loaded in WSL2 in console mode. Core components of FreeBSD are successfully running. Current work is focused on adding network support, optimizing input/output, and process management. Future plans include integrating FreeBSD utilities with the Windows environment and preparing documentation.
The project WSL2 developed by Microsoft provides a virtual machine with a full Linux kernel, in which Linux distributions can run. The kernel includes WSL-specific changes, such as optimizations to reduce boot time and memory consumption, the ability for Windows to reclaim memory freed by Linux processes, and settings to exclude unnecessary drivers and subsystems. The system is installed in a separate disk image (VHD) with an ext4 file system and a virtual network adapter.
