The PumpkinOS project attempts to create a re-implementation of the PalmOS operating system, which was used in communicators by Palm. PumpkinOS allows applications built for PalmOS to run directly without the need for a PalmOS emulator and does not require the original PalmOS firmware. Applications compiled for the m68K architecture can run on systems with x86 and ARM processors. The project's code is written in C and is distributed under the GPLv3 license.
The application runtime environment supports operation in Linux and Windows, but can also be built as a self-sufficient bootable OS (the system environment is based on the Linux kernel and the BusyBox package). A graphical interface is provided for navigating the available applications and switching between them. Four basic applications, with code migrated from the PalmOS SDK, are included: an address book, a to-do note system, the MemoPad text editor, and a calendar.
