The developers of the anonymous Tor network and the Tails distribution have announced a merger of their projects. The further development of the Tails distribution will occur within the Tor project, simplifying collaborative work, enhancing viability, reducing overhead, and expanding capabilities to combat digital threats. The Tails distribution (The Amnesic Incognito Live System) is based on a Debian package base, features a GNOME desktop, and is designed for anonymous internet access. All connections, except for traffic through the Tor network, are blocked by the packet filter by default.
By joining a larger organization that advocates for the same ideas and shares common goals, the Tails development team can avoid spreading their attention across routine organizational and infrastructure issues and focus solely on developing and improving the distribution. It is noted that the projects have been closely collaborating since 2015, and the merger was a natural step after Tails outgrew its organizational structure.
