The U-boot project, which develops a bootloader for embedded devices, has joined the non-profit organization Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC), which focuses on gathering and redistributing sponsorship funds, as well as providing legal protection for free projects. SFC allows participants to concentrate on the development process by handling donation collection. SFC also becomes the owner of the project's assets and relieves developers of personal liability in case of legal disputes.
Since SFC falls under a preferential tax category, directing funds for U-Boot's development through this organization will allow for a tax deduction on donations. Projects supported by SFC include BusyBox, CoreBoot, Git, Inkscape, Mercurial, OpenWrt, QEMU, Samba, Sourceware, Wine, Xorg, and about a dozen other free projects.
