VSCodium builds are prepared for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and come with built-in support for Git, JavaScript, TypeScript, and Node.js. In terms of functionality, VSCodium replicates Visual Studio Code and offers plugin-level compatibility (such as support for C++, C#, Java, Python, PHP, and Go through plugins).
Visual Studio Code is developed by Microsoft as an open project available under the MIT license, but the officially provided binary builds are not identical to the source texts, as they include components for tracking actions in the editor and sending telemetry. The collection of telemetry is explained by the optimization of the interface based on the real behavior of developers. Furthermore, the binary builds are distributed under a separate proprietary license. The VSCodium project provides ready-to-install packages offered under the MIT license, saving time on manually building Visual Studio Code from the source.
It is worth noting that the Visual Studio Code editor is built using the Atom project and the Electron platform, based on the Chromium and Node.js codebase. The editor features a built-in debugger, tools for working with Git, refactoring tools, code navigation, autocompletion of standard constructs, and contextual hints. Support for more than 100 programming languages and technologies is available. To extend the functionality of Visual Studio Code, there is an option to install extensions.
