Compared to October of last year, the ranking also notes a rise in the popularity of languages like Assembler (up from 17th to 10th place), Visual Basic (from 19th to 11th place), SQL (from 10th to 8th place), Go (from 14th to 12th), MatLab (from 15th to 13th), Fortran (from 37th to 18th), Object Pascal (from 22nd to 20th), D (from 44th to 34th), and Lua (from 38th to 32nd). The popularity of Perl has decreased (ranking down from 11th to 19th place), R (from 9th to 14th), Ruby (from 13th to 16th), PHP (from 8th to 9th), Groovy (from 12th to 15th), and Swift (from 16th to 17th), Rust (from 25th to 26th).
Regarding other popularity assessments of programming languages, according to the IEEE Spectrum ranking, Python also holds the first place, followed by Java in second, C in third, and C++ in fourth. In the October PYPL ranking, which uses Google Trends, the top four leaders have not changed over the year: Python takes first place, followed by Java, JavaScript, and C#. The C/C++ language has risen to 5th place, pushing PHP to 6th place.
In the RedMonk ranking, based on popularity assessment on GitHub and discussion activity on Stack Overflow, the top ten looks as follows: JavaScript, Python, Java, PHP, C#, C++, CSS, TypeScript, Ruby, C. Over the year, Python has moved up from third to second place.
