The GTK5 branch will include changes that break API compatibility, such as the deprecation of certain widgets like the old file selection dialog. There is also discussion about potentially dropping support for the X11 protocol in the GTK5 branch and only allowing operation using the Wayland protocol.
Among additional plans, there is an intention to use a programming language more expressive than C and a more functional compiler than what's available for C for GTK development. The specific programming language to be used is not specified. The idea is not to completely rewrite all GTK components in a new language, but rather to experiment with replacing small parts of GTK with implementations in another language.
