Thirty years ago, at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, developer Dave Plummer registered temporary code for the 'Formatting' dialog box. It was intended that the appearance and functionality of this dialog would be redesigned later, but no one ever got around to it— in Windows 11, the 'Formatting' tool looks the same as in Windows NT. 'We migrated millions of lines of code from the Windows 95 user interface to NT, and formatting was just one of those areas where Windows NT was so different from Windows 95 that we had to come up with our own user interface,' Plummer recalled. 'I pulled out a sheet of paper and wrote down all the possible disk formatting options, such as file system, label, cluster size, compression, encryption, and so on.'
