Positive Technologies has released , which examines current cyber threats and trends in the world of internet crime.
Overall, the cybersecurity situation is worsening. In the last quarter of 2019, the number of unique incidents rose by 12% compared to the previous quarter. Meanwhile, the share of targeted attacks increased by 2%, reaching 67%.
Cybercriminals continue to actively use programs that encrypt data on infected computers. The share of such attacks in the overall mass of malware infections accounted for 36% for legal entities and 17% for individuals, compared to 27% and 7% in the third quarter of 2019 respectively.
Moreover, cybercriminals are increasingly applying a new blackmail tactic in response to victims refusing to pay a ransom for file decryption: attackers threaten to publish stolen data.
‘We attribute this to the fact that more organizations are backing up their data and are not paying for decryption. Attackers have taken countermeasures and are now blackmailing victims with possible sanctions for personal data leaks, which are regulated by the General Data Protection Regulation,’ notes Positive Technologies.
The study also showed that one-third of the information stolen from legal entities (32%) consisted of payment card data, which is 25% more than in the third quarter.
