Among the upcoming changes in Fedora 31 is to cease the creation of main repositories for the i686 architecture. The formation of multi-lib repositories for x86_64 environments will be maintained, and i686 packages will be preserved in them.
This change has not yet been reviewed by the FESCo (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee), which is responsible for the technical aspects of Fedora distribution development.
The proposal complements implemented in the rawhide branch to stop the creation of boot images for the Linux kernel for the i686 architecture. The discontinuation of the kernel package effectively ends the possibility of installing Fedora on 32-bit x86 systems. However, users will still have the option to update already installed systems from repositories. This new proposal raises doubts about that possibility, as users will be forced to use outdated kernel packages that contain unpatched vulnerabilities.
Essentially, 32-bit repositories remain necessary only for debugging and testing multi-lib packages that allow running 32-bit programs in a 64-bit environment. But this task can now be addressed by the package build system .
