The developers of the LLVM project to follow the example of and discontinue the use of the term 'master' to identify the main repository. This change is presented as a demonstration that the LLVM community is inclusive and sensitive to issues that may cause discomfort to certain groups of participants.
Instead of 'master', neutral alternatives are suggested, such as 'dev', 'trunk', 'main', or 'default'. It is noted that prior to the transition from SVN to Git, the main branch was named 'trunk', which remains familiar to developers. At the same time, a proposal to consider renaming the terms whitelist/blacklist to allowlist/denylist is being made. It is acknowledged that renaming the main branch will require changes to build scripts, continuous integration settings, and related scripts, but it is emphasized that these changes will be minor compared to the recent migration from SVN to Git.
Most participants , numbering more than 60 messages, expressed their support for the renaming. The proposal includes Chris Lattner, the founder and chief architect of LLVM, but he recommended not to rush and to wait and see how it unfolds. GitHub's initiative to cease using the name 'master' by default for main branches (to use the same terminology for renaming as in GitHub).
There was also sarcasm about taking the situation to absurdity, which some people considered seriously. ( in LLVM) , that if we are talking about inclusivity, we need to consider the appropriateness of using other words, such as 'work' and 'job', since in Russian, 'worker' sounds like 'работник' or 'рабочий', and these words contain the root 'раб', which translates to 'slave'.
