Jeff Mahoney, director of the SUSE Labs, has proposed to the community the discontinuation of support for the ReiserFS file system in openSUSE. The motivation includes the plan to remove ReiserFS from the core by 2025, the stagnation in the maintenance of this file system, and the lack of fault tolerance capabilities offered by modern file systems to protect against corruption in case of a crash or compromise.
It is proposed to immediately remove the reiserfs package from the openSUSE Tumbleweed repository and disable the ReiserFS implementation running at the Linux kernel level. For those with partitions using ReiserFS for data access, it is suggested to use the FUSE frontend for reiserfs included with GRUB. Notably, in 2006, Jeff Mahoney initiated the discontinuation of ReiserFS as the default option in openSUSE. Support for ReiserFS was dropped in SUSE 4 years ago.
