Developers of the AlmaLinux distribution have announced the creation of a working group called 'Media & Entertainment SIG', which will focus on enhancing the capabilities of AlmaLinux for use in professional studios involved in visual effects, animation, and post-production. The goal of the working group is to transform AlmaLinux into a Linux platform suitable for professional use in studios of any size.
The group will facilitate collaboration among content creators, engineers, and open source developers to ensure AlmaLinux compatibility with professional applications and to develop solutions that meet studio-specific requirements. In the first quarter of 2026, the focus will be on documenting the AlmaLinux configuration for workstations and render farms. In the second half of 2026, official reference specifications for architecture and compatibility guidelines are expected to be published.
Among the tasks set:
- Ensuring seamless and optimal operation of packages such as Nuke, Houdini, Maya, and Blender on AlmaLinux.
- Preparing reference builds and configurations for studio workstations, servers rendering, and storage systems.
- Documenting studio workflows that encompass data storage, networking, and distributed rendering organization.
- Creating recommendations for enhancing security, optimizing performance, and increasing the reliability of operational systems.
- Organizing collaborative efforts for preparing and testing packages, as well as addressing errors and issues related to specialized studio software.
