The release of the ReactOS 0.4.12 operating system has been presented, aimed at ensuring compatibility with Microsoft Windows programs and drivers.
This is the twelfth release since the project transitioned to a more agile release schedule of approximately every three months. For 21 years, this operating system has been in 'alpha' development stage. Installation ISO image (122 MB) and Live build (90 MB). The project's code is distributed under GPLv2 and LGPLv2 licenses.
Despite the rapid release schedule, the final preparation of the release, which traditionally took place in a separate branch, took almost six months. The reason for this lengthy preparation process was the desire of release engineer Joachim Henze to fix as many regressions accumulated over the past few years as possible. As a result, more than 33 regressions were eliminated, which can be considered an impressive achievement.
The most significant fix in version 0.4.12 was the elimination of a series of issues that led to rendering distortions of text on buttons in many different applications, such as iTunes and applications based on the .NET framework (2.0 and 4.0).
Two new themes have been added – Lunar in an XP style with a modified color scheme and Mizu in the style of newer versions of Windows.
Support for window alignment of applications relative to the edges of the screen or expanding/collapsing when the window is moved with the mouse in specific directions has been activated.
A free driver for the Intel e1000 network adapter, commonly used in VirtualBox and VMware virtual network interfaces, has been added. Its development was carried out by Viktor Perevertkin and Mark Jensen.
Stanislav Motylkov added the capability to load and manage drivers for MIDI instruments.
The oldest bug report fixed in ReactOS 0.4.12 was the CORE-187 request to add support for local Dll overriding using files with the '.local' extension. Local overriding is necessary for the operation of many portable applications.
Issues with the implementation of network booting via the PXE protocol have been resolved.
The code has been rewritten to prevent modification of components executed in kernel-space (ntoskrnl, win32k, drivers, etc.) by applications.
Synchronization has been completed with the Wine Staging 4.0 codebase and third-party component versions have been updated: btrfs 1.1, uniata 0.47, ACPICA 20190405, libpng 1.6.35, mbedtls 2.7.10, mpg123 1.25.10, libxml2 2.9.9, libxslt 1.1.33, libtiff 4.0.10.
