The release of the proprietary Vivaldi browser 6.6 has been published, developed on the Chromium engine. Vivaldi builds are prepared for Linux, Windows, and macOS. The changes made to the Chromium codebase are distributed under an open license. The browser interface is written in JavaScript using the React library, Node.js platform, Browserify, and various ready-made NPM modules. The implementation of the interface is available in the source texts but under a proprietary license.
The browser is developed by former Opera Presto developers and aims to create a customizable and functional browser that preserves user data privacy. Key features include a tracker and ad blocker, note, history, and bookmark managers, a private browsing mode, synchronization, secured with end-to-end encryption, a tab grouping mode, a sidebar, a configurator with numerous settings, a horizontal tab display mode, as well as a built-in email client, RSS reader, and calendar in beta mode.
In the new release:
- Support for extensions in web panels has been added, allowing navigation within web panels. The sidePanel API can be used for developing extensions for web panels.
- The email client has added advanced message search tools based on multiple criteria that can be used either separately or in combination with others, allowing for easy message retrieval from archives of any size. Users can also save search results as a filter for automatic sorting of new emails.
- Users can enforce a dark theme across all visited pages. In the browser settings, there is also an option for automatic detection of the need to apply the dark theme based on the support provided by the visited site.
- All site permission and access rights settings have been moved to a separate section of the configurator, with an automatically generated list of sites having individual permission settings. For such sites, options that differ from global settings are highlighted in the settings.
- The ability to import/export notes and reading lists has been added.
- The performance of the built-in translator has been improved.
