The release of the proprietary Vivaldi 7.6 browser has been announced, developed on the Chromium engine by former developers of the Opera Presto engine. Vivaldi builds are prepared for Linux, Windows, and macOS. Changes made to the Chromium codebase are distributed under an open license. The browser's interface is written in JavaScript using the React library, the Node.js platform, Browserify, and various pre-built NPM modules. The implementation of the interface is available in the source texts but under a proprietary license.
The project aims to create a customizable and functional browser that maintains user data privacy. Key features include a tracker and ad blocker, note, history, and bookmark managers, private browsing mode, synchronization protected by end-to-end encryption, tab grouping mode, a sidebar, a configurator with numerous settings, horizontal tab display mode, and also in testing mode a built-in email client, RSS reader, and calendar.
The new version includes the following improvements:
- The tab strip can now be customized just like other panels, allowing buttons and controls from other panels to be dragged onto it. All necessary buttons can be dragged to the tab strip while disabling other panels, giving all screen space for viewing with a single narrow panel at the top. The unofficial name for this feature is 'single-line panel', which could previously be achieved using unofficial modifications of the Vivaldi browser.
- Instead of separate buttons for synchronized tabs and recently closed tabs, one button has been added that provides access to all tabs — open, unread, synchronized, duplicates, and recently closed.
- The address bar now features a search option for open tabs, history, and bookmarks. To activate the feature, simply type in '@' and then select the desired search category from the list.
- All context menus have been formatted more compactly, with similar options now grouped into submenus.
- An automatic dialog for settings opens when creating a group (with an option to disable this in settings).
- Added swipe navigation forward and backward using the trackpad, touchpad, or touchscreen (Windows only).
- Enhanced pop-up blocking capabilities. New rules have been added for closing tabs or windows that open without permission.
- The Chromium engine has been updated to version 140.0.7339.202.
