Release of Cozystack 0.8.0, an open PaaS platform based on Kubernetes.

The release of the open-source PaaS platform Cozystack 0.8.0, built on Kubernetes, has been announced. The project aims to provide a ready-made platform for hosting providers and a framework for building private and public clouds. The platform is installed directly on servers and covers all aspects of infrastructure preparation for offering managed services. Cozystack allows the deployment and provision of Kubernetes clusters, databases, and virtual machines. The platform's code is available on GitHub and is distributed under the Apache-2.0 license.

The base technology stack uses Talos Linux and Flux CD. The images with the system, kernel, and necessary modules are pre-built and updated atomically, allowing for the avoidance of components such as dkms and package managers, while ensuring stable operation. A straightforward installation method is provided in an empty data center using PXE and the Debian-like installer talos-bootstrap.

The platform includes an open-source network fabric implementation based on Kube-OVN and uses Cilium for service networking, with MetalLB for external service announcements. The storage is implemented on LINSTOR, offering ZFS as the underlying storage layer and DRBD for replication. A preconfigured monitoring stack based on VictoriaMetrics and Grafana is available. To launch of virtual machines KubeVirt technology is used, which allows for running traditional virtual machines directly in Kubernetes containers and already has all the necessary integrations with Cluster API for launching managed Kubernetes clusters within the 'bare-metal' Kubernetes cluster.

In the new version:

  • FluxCD has been updated to version 2.3. The installation logic for FluxCD has been completely redesigned, and the community Helm chart has been replaced with the official fluxcd operator.
  • Support for managed extensions for custom clusters has been added: now ingress-nginx, cert-manager, and FluxCD can be installed in one click through the GUI.
  • The ability to route traffic to custom Kubernetes clusters through the main ingress controller has been added.
  • End-to-end tests have been added.
  • For PostgreSQL, the ability to enable quorum-based synchronous replication has been implemented.
  • Basic support for ARM architecture has been introduced for the distro-hosted set.
  • Improvements in DX: a kustomize handler has been added, so now make apply / make diff simulates the 'apply' operation as if it were done via FluxCD, showing only the relevant changes.
  • The Etcd operator included in the platform has been updated to version 0.3.0:
    • Support for ARM has been added.
    • The operator architecture has been refined, a flow chart drawn, and a change made that improves status checking.
    • Storage handling has been improved: the auto-pack mode is now enabled by default, and logic for automatically calculating quota-backend-bytes has been added, which is now automatically set to 95% of the PVC size (by default, etcd knows nothing about the storage size, and the new feature includes automatic default storage settings).
