Despite moving away from the Unity shell and transitioning to Gnome, Canonical continues to develop the Mir display server, with the release of version 1.5 having recently occurred.
Among the changes, the expansion of the MirAL (Mir Abstraction Layer) is notable, which is used to avoid direct calls to the Mir server and abstract access to the ABI through the libmiral library. MirAL now includes support for the application_id property, the ability to crop windows to specified area boundaries, and provides the support for setting environment variables on Mir-based servers for launching clients.
Packages are prepared for Ubuntu 16.04, 18.04, 18.10, 19.04, and Fedora 29 and 30. The code is distributed under the GPLv2 license.
Canonical sees Mir as a solution for embedded devices and the Internet of Things (IoT). Mir can also be used as a compositor server for Wayland.
