Release of the Devuan 2.1 distribution, a fork of Debian 9 without systemd

About a year and a half after the branch 2.0 was formed introduced the release of the distribution Devuan 2.1 'ASCII', the fork Debian GNU/Linux, provided without the system manager systemd. The release continues to use the package base Debian 9 "Stretch". The transition to the Debian 10 package base will be made in the release Devuan 3 'Beowulf', which is currently under development.

For download are prepared Live images and installation ISO images for AMD64 and i386 architectures (for ARM and virtual machines, official builds have not been created and will be prepared later by the community). Devuan-specific packages can be downloaded from the repository packages.devuan.org. Migration is supported to Devuan 2.1 from Debian 8.x 'Jessie' or Debian 9.x 'Stretch'. Noteworthy changes in Devuan 2.1 include the addition of a standard option in the installation images for using the init system

. The ability to use OpenRC as an alternative to SysVinit was available previously but required manipulation in expert installation mode. Only in expert mode will options such as changing the bootloader (installing lilo instead of grub) and excluding non-free firmware continue to be provided. The default repository is set to deb.devuan.org, which randomly redirects to one of 12 mirrors (country-related OpenRCmirrors need to be set separately). The live builds include packages like memtest86+, lvm2, and mdadm. A patch has been applied to DBus, which generates a new system identifier (machine-id) during boot for DBus (the use of the identifier is configured through /etc/default/dbus). The Devuan 2.1 builds also include all updates created for Debian 9 addressing vulnerabilities, which had previously been delivered through the standard package update installation system. Let’s remind that within the Devuan project, support is provided for branches of 381 Debian packages, which have been modified to eliminate dependencies on systemd, rebranding, or adapting for the features of the Devuan infrastructure.

are present only in Devuan and are related to repository configuration and build system operations. Otherwise, Devuan is fully compatible with Debian and can be used as a base for creating specialized Debian builds without systemd.

The default desktop is based on Xfce and the Slim display manager. Optionally available for installation are KDE, MATE, Cinnamon, and LXQt. A classic initialization system SysVinitis provided instead of systemd. Optional is available a mode of operation without D-Bus, allowing for the creation of minimalist desktop configurations based on window managers such as blackbox, fluxbox, fvwm, fvwm-crystal, and openbox. For network configuration, a version of the NetworkManager configurator, not tied to systemd, is offered. Instead of systemd-udev, eudev, a fork of udev from the Gentoo project, is used. For managing user sessions in KDE, Cinnamon, and LXQt, elogind, a version of logind not tied to systemd, is offered. In Xfce and MATE, consolekit.
