Release of the Kali Linux 2021.3 distribution for security research

The release of the Kali Linux 2021.3 distribution has been unveiled, designed for testing systems for vulnerabilities, conducting audits, analyzing residual information, and identifying the consequences of attacks by malicious actors. All original developments created within the distribution are released under the GPL license and are available through a public Git repository. Several ISO image options have been prepared for download, sized at 380 MB, 3.8 GB, and 4.6 GB. The builds are available for x86, x86_64, and ARM architectures (armhf and armel, Raspberry Pi, Banana Pi, ARM Chromebook, Odroid). By default, the Xfce desktop is offered, but KDE, GNOME, MATE, LXDE, and Enlightenment e17 are optionally supported.

Kali includes one of the most comprehensive toolsets for computer security specialists: from tools for testing web applications and penetrating wireless networks to software for reading data from RFID identification chips. It comes with a collection of exploits and over 300 specialized utilities for security checks, such as Aircrack, Maltego, SAINT, Kismet, Bluebugger, Btcrack, Btscanner, Nmap, p0f. Additionally, the distribution includes tools for accelerating password cracking (Multihash CUDA Brute Forcer) and WPA keys (Pyrit) using CUDA and AMD Stream technology, allowing the utilization of NVIDIA and AMD GPUs for computational operations.

In the new release:

  • OpenSSL settings have been modified to achieve maximum compatibility, including reverting support for deprecated protocols and algorithms by default, such as TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1. To disable the outdated algorithms, you can use the kali-tweaks utility (Hardening/Strong Security).
  • The project site has launched the Kali-Tools section with a collection of information about the available tools.
  • The performance of the Live session has been improved under virtualization systems VMware, VirtualBox, Hyper-V, and QEMU+Spice, for example, adding the ability to use a shared clipboard with the host system and support for drag & drop functionality. Virtualization-specific settings can be changed using the kali-tweaks utility (Virtualization section).
  • New utilities added:
    • Berate_ap - creating fake wireless access points.
    • CALDERA - an emulator of malicious activity.
    • EAPHammer - conducting an attack on Wi-Fi networks with WPA2-Enterprise.
    • HostHunter - identifying active hosts on the network.
    • RouterKeygenPC - generating keys for WPA/WEP Wi-Fi.
    • Subjack - subdomain takeover.
    • WPA_Sycophant - implementing a client for conducting an EAP Relay attack.
  • The KDE desktop has been updated to version 5.21.
  • Improved support for Raspberry Pi, Pinebook Pro, and various ARM devices.
  • TicHunter Pro has been prepared — a version of the NetHunter editor for TicWatch Pro smartwatches. NetHunter provides environments for mobile devices based on the Android platform, featuring a collection of tools for testing systems for vulnerabilities. With NetHunter, it is possible to conduct attacks specific to mobile devices, for example, by emulating the operation of USB devices (BadUSB and HID Keyboard — emulating a network USB adapter, which can be used for MITM attacks, or a USB keyboard that performs character substitution) and creating rogue access points (MANA Evil Access Point). NetHunter is installed in the standard environment of the Android platform as a chroot image, where a specially adapted version of Kali Linux runs.
