After a year of development, the release of the Live distribution NST 34 (Network Security Toolkit) took place, intended for network security analysis and monitoring its functioning. The size of the bootable ISO image (x86_64) is 4.8 GB. A special repository has been prepared for Fedora Linux users, allowing the installation of all developments created within the NST project on an already installed system. The distribution is based on Fedora 34 and allows the installation of additional packages from external repositories compatible with Fedora Linux.
The distribution includes a comprehensive collection of applications related to network security (for example: Wireshark, NTop, Nessus, Snort, NMap, Kismet, TcpTrack, Etherape, nsttracroute, Ettercap, etc.). A special web interface has been prepared to manage the security auditing process and automate the invocation of various utilities, which also integrates a web frontend for the Wireshark network analyzer. The graphical environment of the distribution is based on FluxBox.
In the new release:
- The package base is synchronized with Fedora 34. Kernel version 5.12 is used. The applications included have been updated to the latest releases.
- The NST WUI web interface integrates the lft utility (an alternative to traceroute and whois utilities that supports various route tracing modes, including those based on TCP SYN/FIN, and provides information about autonomous systems).
- Support for the Ntopng REST API has been added to NST WUI.
- NST WUI provides the ability to display the results of quick directory scans in a tabular format.
- NST script etherapedump is included for extracting network resources from Etherape XML files.
- The status of switching network interfaces to promiscuous mode is displayed, allowing the analysis of transit network frames not addressed to the current system.
- In the NST WUI section for working with Nmap, scanning options for detecting DHCP and SMB services have been added.
- The host name detection widget (NST Host Name Tools) has added the massdns utility for sending DNS requests in batch mode.
- The old navigation menu that was displayed in the left column has been removed from the main NST WUI page.
- Buttons for copying to the clipboard have been added to the tables reports pages in NST WUI.
