After a year of development, the release of the OpenMandriva Lx 4.3 distribution is presented. The project is driven by the community after Mandriva S.A. transferred project management to the non-profit organization 'OpenMandriva Association'. A live build of 2.5 GB (x86_64) is available for download, 'znver1' build optimized for AMD Ryzen, ThreadRipper, and EPYC processors, as well as images for ARM devices such as PinebookPro, Raspberry Pi 4B/3B+, Rock Pi 4A/4B/4C, Synquacer, Cubox Pulse, and various server boards based on the Arch64 architecture.
Key Changes:
- The Clang compiler used for building packages has been updated to LLVM 13 branch. All components of the distribution can be built solely with Clang, including an option for a kernel package built with Clang.
- System packages have been updated, including Linux kernel 5.16, Calamares installer 3.2.39, systemd 249, binutils 2.37, gcc 11.2, glibc 2.34, Java 17, PHP 8.1.2.
- Desktop and graphics stack components are updated: KDE Plasma 5.23.5, KDE Frameworks 5.90.0, KDE Gear 21.12.2, Qt 5.15.3, Xorg 21.1.3, Wayland 1.20.0, FFmpeg 5.0, Mesa 21.3.5, AMDVLK 2022.Q1.2. Session functionality based on Wayland protocol has improved, and hardware-accelerated video encoding (VA-API) support has been added in Wayland-based environments.
- The repository has updated packages with user environments: LXQt 1.0.0, Xfce 4.16, GNOME 41, MATE 1.26, Lumina 1.6.2, IceWM 2.9.5, i3-wm 4.20, CuteFish 0.7, and Maui-shell.
- User applications have been updated: LibreOffice 7.3.0, Falkon 3.2, Firefox 96, Chromium 97 (beta 98, dev 99), Krita 5.0.2, GIMP 2.10.30, Audacity 3.1.3, Blender 3.0.1, Steam 1.0.0.72, Calligra Suite 3.2.1, Digikam 7.5, SMPlayer 21.10.0, VLC 3.0.16, VirtualBox 6.1.32, OBS Studio 27.1.3.
- The Desktop Presets configurator (om-feeling-like) has been updated, offering a set of presets that allow the KDE Plasma desktop to resemble the appearance of other environments (such as Ubuntu, Windows 7, Windows 10, macOS, etc.).
- The OM Welcome application, designed for initial setup and user familiarization with the system, has been updated to include the ability for quick installation of standard additional programs not included in the base package.
- The Software Repository Selector (om-repo-picker) application has improved functionality for connecting additional package repositories.
- By default, multimedia PipeWire is used for sound processing, which has replaced PulseAudio (it can be reverted from the repository). server PipeWire, which has replaced PulseAudio (can be restored from the repository).
- The port for 64-bit ARM processors (aarch64) has been fully prepared and tested on devices such as PinebookPro, Raspberry Pi 4B/3B+, Rock Pi 4A/4B/4C, Synquacer, and Cubox Pulse, as well as on server boards supporting UEFI.
- An experimental build of OpenMandriva for the PinePhone smartphone has been prepared.
- Work continues on the port for the RISC-V architecture, which was not included in the 4.3 release.
