After one and a half years of development, the release of the OpenMandriva Lx 5.0 distribution has been announced. The project is being developed by the community following the transfer of project management from Mandriva S.A. to the non-profit organization 'OpenMandriva Association.' Live builds are available for download for the x86_64 architecture with KDE (full 3.0 GB, slim 2.5 GB, and optimized for AMD Ryzen, ThreadRipper, and EPYC processors), GNOME, and LxQt. A server build and images for ARM64 architecture boards (Raspberry Pi 4) will be published shortly. Users of the continuously updated OpenMandriva ROME branch, which provided access to innovations for OpenMandriva Lx 5, have already received all necessary updates (separate distribution updates are not required).
Key Changes:
- The file system structure has been reorganized â all executable files and libraries from the root directories have been moved to the /usr section (the /bin, /sbin, and /lib* directories are now symbolic links to the corresponding directories within /usr).
- The Clang compiler used for building packages has been updated to the LLVM 17 branch. It is now possible to build all components of the distribution using only Clang, including a variant of the package with the Linux kernel, compiled in Clang.
- System packages have been updated, including Linux kernel 6.6.2, systemd 254.5, GCC 13.1, glibc 2.38, binutils 2.41, and Calamares installer 3.2.62.
- Desktop and graphics stack components have been updated: KDE Plasma 5.27.9, KDE Frameworks 5.112, KDE Gear 23.08.3, LxQt 1.4, Qt 5.15.11, Xorg 21.1.9, Wayland 23.2.2, Mesa 23.3.0 rc4.3.
- User applications have been updated: LibreOffice 7.6.3, Falkon 23.08.3, Firefox 120, Chromium 119, Krita 5.2.1, GIMP 2.10.36, Calligra Suite 3.3.0, Digikam 8.1.0, SMPlayer 23.6.0, VLC 3.0.18, Virtualbox 7.0.12a, OBS Studio 30.0.0.
- Support for installation on BTRFS and XFS filesystem partitions has been resumed.
- In addition to the default package manager dnf4, alternatives dnf5 and zypper have been offered.
- Support for Flatpak packages has been added.
- The formation of a minimal build with KDE and a build with the LXQt user environment has begun.
- Updated applications developed for OpenMandriva: OM Welcome, OM Control Center, Repository Selector (repo-picker), Update Configuration (om-update-config).
- As in previous builds, the Desktop Presets (om-feeling-like) configurator is present, offering a set of presets to give the KDE Plasma desktop the appearance of other environments (for example, making it resemble the interfaces of Ubuntu, Windows 7, Windows 10, macOS, Plasma).
- Work on the port for the RISC-V architecture continues, which may be included in the 6.0 release.
