After one and a half years of development, the OpenMandriva Lx 6.0 distribution is released. The project is developed by the community after Mandriva S.A. transferred the management of the project to the non-profit organization 'OpenMandriva Association'.
Live versions are available for download for x86_64 architecture with KDE (full 3.2 GB, minimal 2.4 GB in X11 and Wayland options), GNOME (3.2 GB), Cosmic (3 GB), Xfce (2.5 GB), and LXQt (2.3 GB), as well as a server version (1.6 GB). Both general builds for any x86_64 systems and builds with optimizations for AMD Ryzen, ThreadRipper, and EPYC processors are offered. servers Additionally, a variant for ARM64 architecture boards is provided. Key Changes:
- The default desktop environment has been updated to the KDE Plasma 6 branch. Offered are versions KDE Plasma 6.3.4, KDE Gear 25.04, KDE Frameworks 6.13.0, and Qt 6.9.0. Sessions based on X11 and Wayland can be utilized. Optionally, a KDE 5-based environment can be installed, which includes KDE Plasma 5.27.12, KDE Gear 23.08.5, KDE Frameworks 5.116, and Qt 5.15.15.
- User environment versions in alternative builds have been updated: LXQt 2.2.0, GNOME 48.1, Xfce 4.20, and COSMIC 1.0-alpha6. The repository has updated packages for mate, cinnamon, icewm, i3, sway, hyprland, hypr, wayfire, and budgie.
- A new edition of the distribution has been introduced â OpenMandriva Server, which is provided without a graphical interface and is positioned as a foundation for server deployment. Unlike desktop builds, the server version is not offered in ISO format but as a ready disk image suitable for cloud systems and virtualization platforms. A user 'omv' with the password 'omv' has been created for system access, and configuration via cloud-init is supported.
To install OpenMandriva Server on stationary disks, copy the disk image to a USB Flash drive, boot from it, and launch the installer with the command 'install-openmandriva'. Only the minimal package set is included, and typical server applications are offered for installation from the repositories. In addition to x86_64 systems, server images are also available for Aarch64 (ARM64) architecture.
- Updated applications developed for OpenMandriva: OM Welcome, OM Control Center, Repository Selector (repo-picker), Update Configuration (om-update-config).
- As before, the build includes the Desktop Presets configurator (om-feeling-like), offering a set of presets that allow the KDE Plasma desktop to resemble the interface of Ubuntu, various versions of Windows, or macOS.
- The Linux kernel 6.14.2 (optionally 6.15.0-rc2) is compiled in Clang.
- The LibreOffice package 25.2.3 is built with components for integration with Qt 6 and Plasma 6.
- Chromium 135.0.7049.84 is built with patches that remove ties to Google services and reintroduce support for the JPEG-XL format. Firefox 137.0.2 comes with patches that eliminate telemetry and data transmission to third-party services.
- System packages are updated: systemd 257.5, glibc 2.41, binutils 2.44, and VirtualBox 7.1.8, Java 24.
- The Clang compiler used for building packages has been updated to the LLVM 19 branch. It is possible to build all distribution components using only Clang, including an option for the Linux kernel compiled in Clang. GCC has been updated to version 14.2.1.
- User applications updated: Falkon 25.04.0, GIMP 3.0.2, QMPlay2 25.01.19, Telegram Desktop 5.13.1, Krita 5.2.9, Digikam 8.6.0, SMPlayer 24.5.0, VLC 3.0.21, VokoscreenNG 4.5.0, OBS Studio 31.0.3.
- The graphics stack has been updated to X.org Server 21.1.16, Wayland 1.23.1, and Mesa 25.0.4.
- The Calamares installer has been updated to version 3.3.14.
- For gaming enthusiasts, packages proton and proton-experimental are available in the repositories.
- Flatpak package support has been added.
