An update for the Ubuntu 18.04.6 LTS distribution has been released. This release includes only the accumulated updates for packages related to the resolution of vulnerabilities and issues affecting stability. The kernel and software versions correspond to 18.04.5.
The main objective of the new release is to update the installation images for amd64 and arm64 architectures. The installation image addresses issues related to key revocation during the remediation of the second variant of the BootHole vulnerability in the GRUB2 bootloader. Thus, the possibility of installing Ubuntu 18.04 on systems with UEFI Secure Boot has been restored.
Using the provided build makes sense only for new installations, but for new systems, the Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS release is more relevant. Systems previously installed can receive all changes present in Ubuntu 18.04.6 through the standard update installation system. Support for updates and security fixes for the server and desktop editions of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will continue until April 2023, after which updates will be provided under a separate paid support model (ESM, Extended Security Maintenance) for an additional 5 years.
