Release of Firefox 141

The release of the web browser Firefox 141 has taken place, and updates for the previous long-term support branches — 140.1.0, 115.26.0, and 128.13.0 — have been formed. The Firefox 142 branch has entered beta testing, with a release scheduled for August 19.

Key innovations in Firefox 141:

  • Experimental support for automatic tab grouping has been added, based on a locally running AI model that identifies tabs with similar topics. After dragging one tab over another or opening the context menu with grouping options, the browser now shows a button ‘Suggest more of my tabs’, which, when clicked, displays a list of similar tabs for quick inclusion in the group. AI also suggests a relevant group name. This feature is not yet enabled by default for everyone and will gradually be activated for an increasing percentage of users. To force enable it, you can activate the ‘browser.tabs.groups.smart.enabled’ setting on the about:config page.

  • In the builds for the Linux platform, memory consumption has been reduced, and the requirement for a restart after updates using the package manager has been removed.
  • For users in Brazil, Spain, and Japan, the address auto-fill feature in web forms has been enabled, which was previously available only for the USA, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Poland, Italy, and Austria.
  • By default, the builds for the Windows platform have the WebGPU API and the WGSL (WebGPU Shading Language) shader language enabled. Support for WebGPU on Linux and macOS will be included in one of the upcoming releases, and until then, WebGPU can be activated through the settings "dom.webgpu.enabled" and "gfx.webrender.all" on the about:config page. WebGPU provides a software interface similar to Vulkan, Metal, and Direct3D 12 for performing operations on the GPU side. WebGPU allows applications written in JavaScript to control the organization, processing, and transmission of commands to the GPU, manage related resources, memory, buffers, texture objects, and compiled graphic shaders.
  • When returning proxy server the value "cache" in the HTTP header "Clear-Site-Data", cache transitioning (BFCache - Back-forward cache) has additionally been implemented, providing instant navigation when using the "Back" and "Forward" buttons or when navigating through previously viewed pages of the current site.
  • The HTML element has been enhanced with the "closedby" attribute, which determines the behavior when the dialog is closed. The value "none" means the user cannot close the dialog; "closerequest" allows closure by pressing the ESC key; and "any" leads to closure when clicking outside the dialog or pressing ESC.
  • Support for CHIPS (Cookies Having Independent Partitioned State) technology has been restored, allowing cookies to be isolated in association with domain top-level, using the "Partitioned" attribute. If under normal circumstances a third-party code from site "C", embedded on sites "A" and "B", can handle cookies shared by those sites, then by specifying the "Partitioned" attribute, the cookies set by site "C" when loading code from sites "A" and "B" will be completely separated.

The togglePopover() method has an additional argument "options.force" for forcibly opening or closing the popover.
  • The PointerEvent interface has gained the persistentDeviceId property, and the IntersectionObserver interface has been updated with the scrollMargin property.
  • A new CSS property `font-variant-emoji` has been added to control the style of Emoji display. For example, you can choose between text or graphic representation.

In addition to new features and bug fixes, Firefox 141 addresses 27 vulnerabilities. Thirteen vulnerabilities are related to memory handling issues, such as buffer overflows and access to freed memory regions. These issues could potentially allow an attacker to execute code by opening specially crafted pages.
