The release of Alpine Linux 3.15 is available, a minimalist distribution built on the Musl system library and the BusyBox utility set. The distribution features enhanced security requirements and is compiled with Stack Smashing Protection (SSP). OpenRC is used as the init system, and a proprietary package manager, apk, is used for package management. Alpine is used to create official Docker container images. Bootable iso images (x86_64, x86, armhf, aarch64, armv7, ppc64le, s390x) are prepared in five variants: standard (166 MB), with a non-patched kernel (184 MB), extended (689 MB), and for of virtual machines (54 MB).
In the new release:
- The installer has added support for disk encryption.
- The ability to install third-party kernel modules through AKMS (similar to DKMS, which rebuilds external kernel modules after the distribution updates the kernel package) has been implemented.
- Initial support for UEFI Secure Boot has been proposed for the x86_64 architecture.
- Kernel modules are supplied in compressed form (gzip is used).
- Framebuffer drivers have been disabled in the kernel and replaced with the simpledrm driver.
- Due to stagnation in development, qt5-qtwebkit and related packages have been removed.
- Support for the MIPS64 port has been discontinued (the architecture is considered obsolete).
- Package versions have been updated, including releases of Linux kernel 5.15, llvm 12, GNOME 41, KDE Plasma 5.23 / KDE Applications 21.08 / Plasma Mobile Gear 21.10, nodejs 16.13 and 17.0, PostgreSQL 14, OpenLDAP 2.6, ruby 3.0, rust 1.56, openjdk 17, kea 2.0, xorg-server 21.1.
