The OTA-10 Focal firmware (over-the-air) has been released, developed by the UBports project, which took over the development of the mobile platform Ubuntu Touch after Canonical distanced itself from it. This is the ninth release of Ubuntu Touch, based on the package base of Ubuntu 20.04. The project is also developing an experimental port of the Unity 8 desktop, renamed to Lomiri.
The Ubuntu Touch OTA-10 Focal update will soon be prepared for devices such as Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, F(x)tec Pro1 X, Fairphone 3/3+/4, Google Pixel 3a/3a XL, JingPad A1, Oneplus 5/5T/6/6T, OnePlus Nord N10 5G/N100, Sony Xperia X, Vollaphone X/22/X23, Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC/X3, Xiaomi Poco M2 Pro, Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro/Pro Max/9S, Volla Phone Quintus, Volla Tablet, Lenovo Tab M10 HD 2nd Gen, and Xiaomi Redmi 9/9 Prime. Compared to the previous release, builds have been added for the Rabbit R1 device.
In developing the new release, the main focus was on preparing for the transition to a newer LTS branch of Ubuntu. Among the changes in Ubuntu Touch OTA-10 Focal:
- A new application for upgrading to the new branch, based on Ubuntu 24.04, has been added, which will be ready when the release of Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 is complete.
- The bitrate calculation in the H.264 encoder has been improved.
- The Bluetooth stack Bluez has been updated to version 5.64.
- Initial support for the Nix package manager has been added to lxc-android-config.
- The QtWebEngine browser engine has been updated to release 5.15.19+dfsg-1 from the Debian Experimental repository.
- Support for UHD format has been added.
