The lightweight window manager IceWM 3.0.0 has been released. IceWM provides full management through keyboard shortcuts, the ability to use virtual desktops, taskbars, and application menus. The window manager is configured through a rather simple configuration file, and theme customization is possible. Built-in applets are available for monitoring CPU, memory, and traffic. Several third-party GUIs for configuration, desktop implementation, and menu editors are also being developed separately. The code is written in C++ and is distributed under the GPLv2 license.
The significant version number change is a natural continuation of the versioning scheme used in the project (after the release of 2.9.9, 3.0.0 was formed). However, the 3.0 branch also introduces a substantial new feature—the ability to switch between windows using tabs. A window in IceWM can now include multiple client windows, and switching between them is done via tabs. To merge windows into a tab, simply drag the title of one window over the title of another window, using the middle mouse button while holding the Shift key. To navigate between tabs using the keyboard, you can use the Alt+F6 and Alt+Shift+Esc combinations. Tabs are also displayed in the window's submenu.
